(OK, so I guess you know… we love solitaires).

What are Single Stone Engagement Rings?

A great many people ask the question, “what is a solitaire engagement ring”.

A solitaire engagement ring is a ring with just one singular stone. This single stone may be a diamond or another gemstone. The great majority of engagement rings have a diamond solitaire in the centre. Its an unmistakable ‘engagement ring’.

When we think of solitaires, we think mostly of engagement rings. Other jewellery may also be classed as a solitaire. Jewellery such as earrings and pendants. With a solitaire piece of Jewellery, the focus is on the stone. The diamond or the Gemstone really does do the talking. It’s almost impossible to go wrong with a solitaire engagement ring.

History of the Solitaire Engagement Ring

Who really knows the history of the engagement ring? Its beginnings have been claimed by the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans.

The first documented use of the diamond in an engagement ring dates back to 1477 in Vienna. Archduke Maximillian of Austria in the imperial court of Vienna gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond Engagement Ring. No doubt a whopper!

This is said where the modern-day giving of engagement rings started. The gentry of the age being of higher social class and classicism being everything then started to Mimic Max and started giving diamond rings to their loved ones and brides-to-be.

It has been worn on the ring finger of the left hand as it is said to contain a vein that runs directly to the heart.

Styles of Single Stone Engagement Rings

There are two styles used in the majority of engagement rings.

  • The 4 claw Engagement Ring Solitaire
  • The six-claw Engagement Ring Solitaire.

This is by no means the only style of solitaire as you can have 3 claw solitaires for pear-shaped diamonds or even 2 claws for Marquise shape solitaires (not advisable).

The Four Claw Single Stone Engagement Rings.

By far the most popular style of Solitaire bought in Jewellery shops throughout the world is the classic 4 claw solitaire engagement ring. It has the perfect balance of metal. A solitaire ring showcases the diamond to its fullest capabilities. The solitaire is of a simple style whilst not overpowering the diamond but rather showcasing it in a delicate yet secure setting.

Four claw solitaires can come in a surprisingly different array of styles. Each style has subtle differences giving a completely different look to the ring when on the hand.

The Six Claw Solitaire Ring

The six-claw solitaire was really made popular by a very well-known Jewellery shop in New York which is known for serving a particularly congenial breakfast. An advertising campaign in the 60’s with their green boxes and showcasing the 6-claws is the stuff of Jewellery marketing legend. It etched the image of the 6 claw style into many people’s minds.

Style of a Single Stone Engagement Ring

The shank or the band can come in many different shapes and thicknesses. It is a personal decision as to what width of the band to go with. Most engagement rings are between 1.5mm to 3mm in width. Different finger widths and lengths will look better or worse with differing bandwidths.
