Happy Birthday April Born – Your birthstone is a Diamond.

She who from April dates her years,
Diamonds shall wear, lest bitter tears
For vain repentance flow; this stone,
Emblem of innocence is known.

The name ‘Diamond‘ comes from the Greek word ‘Adamas’ which means unbreakable or invincible.

The Diamond is undeniably the most adored, sought and widely known Gemstone in the world. Its sparkle and scintillation have attracted admirers to its beauty and mystique for centuries. It has signified strength and love for centuries and has always been the ‘go-to’ gem for an engagement ring. Diamonds universally symbolize love and marriage.

Origins Of Diamonds

The origins of the diamond being used in modern society can be traced back to India. Diamonds were originally found in river beds. Meaning instant wealth for the finder. They were highly coveted by the rich in Indian society.

It is believed that diamonds have been traded as far back as the fourth century BC in India. As time went by their popularity within the elite circles grew. As this popularity grew the trade spread across Persia and into Turkey. Finally into Europe in the 14th century. Caravans of traders from India to Venice in the 14th century introduced Diamonds to Europeans and among the elite and wealthy they became fashionable and talked about items. Indeed it is recorded that the first diamond engagement ring was presented to Mary of Burgundy, in 1477 by Archduke Maximillian of Austria…..what a smooth operator!

Another high-profile recorded sale of a diamond was in 1668 when French King Louis XIV bought the Hope diamond. This hope diamond is exceptionally rare as it is a blue diamond and weighs 45.52 carats. At the time of its purchase, the diamond was referred to as the ‘French blue diamond. Later changed to ‘the hope diamond’. It is one of the world’s most famous diamonds. Now it is housed in the Smithsonian museum after it was donated by Harry Winston jeweller in 1958.

Mysterious Diamonds

The complexities of Diamonds throughout history run deep. Diamonds have been said to have healing powers, ward off evil, be cursed, attract lovers, Insure victory over enemies, heal the insane, ward off pestilence, cure sleepwalkers etc.

In the past, it is historical fact that diamonds have started and funded wars over the centuries. It must be clearly stated that this aspect of diamonds has now been (virtually) eliminated through strict control of mining and the polishing and processes to eliminate this ugly side.

This beautiful and complex stone has brought both pleasure and pain through history. The Diamonds beauty and our fascination with this rare and highly prized gem will live like a diamond forever.
