Typically, sapphires appear as blue stones, ranging from very pale blue to deep indigo blue.
This is due to the presence of small amounts of titanium and iron within the crystal structure. Although blue is their most well-known colour, sapphires may also be colourless. Sapphires may be found in many other colours including shades of gray and black. Other popular colours are yellow pale pink, orange, green, violet and brown. The most precious or sought after colour is cornflower blue. These cornflower blue stones are most often found in Kashmir in India. Most of the worlds sapphires are found in Australia especially in New south Wales and Queensland.
Interesting facts about sapphires
The word sapphire comes from the Latin word sapphires meaning blue or the greek word sappheiros. There is actually an Island in the Arabian Sea where sapphires were found in Grecian times. In the middle ages the sapphire was worn by priests as protection from impure thoughts and temptations of the flesh. Chieftains and warriors wore the stones to protect them from envy and harm in battle. Interestingly they also gave their wives sapphire necklaces to guide against temptation and ensure they stay faithful. If the wife was unfaithful it was believed that the stone would turn dark if they were unfaithful or if worn by an unjust person.
