Origins Of Garnet
The name ‘Garnet’ comes from the Latin medieval word for dark red which is granatum. Because of this It is thought it may have originated also from the word for red dye called granum. Although red is a very common and popular choice for a garnet it may also be found in a wide variety of colours including , green, red, purple, yellow, orange, brown and pink and rarest of all blue.
Garnet may be found around the globe with the most popular places for mining this stone being Russia, United States, Keyna, Turkey, India, Australia, Tanzania and Madagascar.
Red Garnet is by far the most common type and its use has been found going back thousands of years. In the times of the Ancient Egyptians it was used for ceremonial and decorative purposes. It may also be found all along the Roman Empire and it was used widely in rings and also used in trade in the form of gemstones.
Oddly enough it wasn’t until recent times that a rare blue garnet was found in Madagascar in the late 1990’s. This very rare stone may change colour slightly according to the light it is exposed to.
