The emerald is the birthstone for the month of May and as such is said to be the symbol of rebirth and is believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune and youth.

Interesting facts on Emeralds
Most of the worlds emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Russia.
The word ‘emerald’ comes from the Greek word “Smaragdos” which means “green stone” in Greek. In fact although emeralds are most usually green they may have blue or yellow undertones. Emeralds loose their entire colour when subjected to high heat.
The earliest records of emeralds being mined is in Upper Egypt as early as 2,000 B.C. They were mined throughout the reign of Alexander the Great and were most famously collected by Cleopatra.
In south and central America Incas and the Aztecs also mined and used emeralds extensively and used them in many of their decorative and religious artefacts and treasures.
The Moguls of India revered Emeralds so much they inscribed the gems with sacred text to be used to ward off evil. The largest of which is the Mughal Emerald, which without doubt was mined in Colombia but was brought to India where such stones are held in higher reverence. The stone is 217.80 carats. The stone was cut in a rectangular shape and is inscribed with beautiful lloral designs and ornate Arabic calligraphy. The dimensions are 52 x 40 x 12mm. A true masterpiece.
