Birthstone for April – Diamond
Happy Birthday April Born – Your birthstone is a Diamond.
She who from April dates her years,
Diamonds shall wear, lest bitter tears
For vain repentance flow; this stone,
Emblem of innocence, is known.
The name ‘Diamond’ comes from the Greek word ‘adamas’ which means unbreakable or invincible.
The Diamond is undeniably the most adored, sought and widely know Gemstone in the world. Its sparkle and scintillation have attracted admirers to its beauty and mystique for century. It has signified strength and love for centuries and has always been the ‘go to’ gem for engagement ring. It is universally known to symbolize love and marriage.
The origins of the diamond being used in modern society can be traced back to India. Diamonds were originally found in river beds and would mean instant wealth for the finder as they were highly coveted by the rich of Indian society.
It is believed that diamonds have been traded as far back as the fourth century BC within India. As time went by their popularity within the elite circles grew and as this popularity grew the trade spread across Persia and into Turkey and finally into Europe in the 14th century. Caravans of traders from India to Venice in the 14th century introduced Diamonds to Europeans and among the elite and wealthy they became fashionable and talked about items. Indeed it is recorded that the first diamond engagement ring was presented to Mary of Burgundy, in 1477 by Archduke Maximillian of Austria…..what a smooth operator!
Another high profile recorded sale of a diamond was in 1668 when French King Louis XIV bought the Hope diamond. This hope diamond is exceptionally rare as it is a blue diamond and weighs 45.52 carats. At the time of its purchase the diamond was referred to as the ‘French blue diamond and was later changed to ‘the hope diamond’ and is one of the worlds most famous diamonds housed in the Smithsonian museum after it was donated by Harry Winston jeweller in 1958.
The complexities of Diamonds throughout history run deep. Diamonds have been said to have healing powers, ward off against evil, been cursed, attract lovers, Insure victory over enemies, heal the insane, ward off pestilence, cure sleep walkers etc etc.
In the past it is historical fact that diamonds have started and funded wars over the century’s. It must be clearly stated that this aspect of diamonds has now been (virtually) eliminated through strict control of mining and the polishing and processes to eliminate this ugly side.
