For Women choosing a wedding ring
Ladies’ wedding rings can be less or more complicated. In our experience, the average woman has decided on her wedding band in approximately 15- 20 mins. It is much easier for them when choosing a wedding ring. The reason is, an engagement ring 9 out of ten times has a matching wedding ring. Metals should not be mixed, you should wear like with like. This is just a general rule but you may make the decision yourself.
Platinum will have a damaging effect when worn next to gold. For example, If your engagement ring is platinum then your wedding band should also be platinum. This factor eliminates the time that you give when choosing the metal for your engagement ring. The width of your wedding band is generally matched to the width of your engagement ring. The average width is 1.8mm – 2.2mm. We find on occasion a woman chooses a wider band if she plans on wearing the wedding band only, occasionally her lifestyle/work doesn’t allow her to wear her engagement ring every day. For example, women who work in the medical sector or a laboratory.
The depth of your wedding band should also match the engagement ring, otherwise, they will not feel flush when worn together. The shape is also factored in whether your engagement ring band is flat or curved. We will note the metal, width, depth and shape of your engagement ring. Then it is simply a matter of deciding whether you prefer the wedding ring to be a plane or diamond set.
Diamonds for Your Wedding Ring
There are several diamond settings to choose from which we will happily show you. If your engagement ring has a pave setting, and if you prefer a diamond set wedding band to a plain wedding band we recommend you wear like with like. The reason being you wouldn’t want the wedding band competing or detracting from your engagement ring. The diamond setting can be applied 1/3, 1/2, 3/4 or the whole way around your wedding band. It is good to bear in mind a wedding band with diamonds the whole way around is difficult and expensive to resize. We advise you to match the length of the setting to your engagement ring so they appear to be a perfect match.
The downside to this process is that unfortunately, you will have to part with your engagement ring for 3-4 weeks. This is so in the rings will be matched perfectly. On a positive note, your engagement ring will be cleaned through the process and upon collection will look like the first day you put it on. If your engagement ring has no diamonds on the band then you have a few more options to choose from. Again working with the engagement ring.
From time to time certain styles of engagement rings do not allow a wedding ring to sit completely flush beside them. Genera, only because they are too low or may have a claw in the way. Things To Think About When Buying A Wedding Ring
Please remember when arranging your wedding budget that your wedding bands are not like flowers or cars. Your wedding bands will be the only daily reminder of your very special day so we would encourage you to set a little more aside and invest in quality rings.
Some jewellers save on metal by making the rings thinner or hollow to save on metal. These rings will easily lose their shape. Others use white gold containing poorer alloys and will have to be rhodium plated every six months. At Loyes we use white gold with a high palladium content that will stay fresher for longer.
In the case of diamond set wedding rings, we use only the most skilled setters so the likelihood of problems with loose stones or stones falling out is minimal. We also match perfectly the quality of the diamonds with the quality of the engagement ring.
